HISTORY

Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of that era. It is considered by many academics to have been the birthplace of the Renaissance, becoming a major artistic, cultural, commercial, political, economic and financial center. The city was under the control of the Medicci family during many years.

With the money earned, the Medici, very rich bankers, sponsored different artists such as Michelangelo. But this was not simply part of the family's affection for art, but it was also the way to express themselves and impose themselves by promoting their political and economic capacities in front of the rest of the political figures of the moment.
